Special administrative region of China (pop., 1997 est.: 6,491,000). Located off China's S coast in the China Sea, it comprises the island of Hong Kong and adjacent islets, the Kowloon Peninsula, and the New Territories, all of which were leased by the British from China for 99 years (1898-1997). The entire territory was returned to China in 1997. It covers 398 sq mi (1,031 sq km); the New Territories, lying north of the Kowloon Peninsula, and constituting an enclave in China's Guangdong province, are more than 90% of the total area. The administrative center of Victoria on Hong Kong island's NW coast is also the center of economic activities. Hong Kong has an excellent natural harbor and is one of the world's major trade and financial centers. It has many educational institutions, incl. the Univ. of Hong Kong (1911).
