My Best Gift

It was on my wedding that I received my best gift from my former primary teacher, Teacher Yang. It was nothing but a collection of old exercise books, which recorded my study in the primary school.

When my former teacher gave me the simple but special present I could not wait to open it, the torn wrinkled exercise books. From the blurry handwriting, I could recall my first attempt at writing and the fear of the feedback I would receive. Despite the simplicity and many mistakes of my composition, Teacher Yang always respected my work and corrected it with patience. I was a so-so student and my parents were told over and over again by others that I could not amount to anything, but Mr. Yang saw more hope in me than in others. When school was over, he let me stay sitting in the back of the classroom and helped me to write correctly. Gradually I looked forward to Mr. Yang’s classes and had interest in study （enthusiasm about sth.）.
Nowadays， whenever I am frustrated, I always open these out-dated exercise books. On the cover of one book, Mr. Yang wrote: “I believe you have the potential to accomplish bigger and better things”. Now I become a lecturer. I always encourage those students who do not perform well instead of criticizing them. I find it really works.

You would never have believed that a collection of old torn exercise books has become my best gift, a motto in my life. To me, it symbolizes appreciation, respect, encouragement and the essence of teaching.
