The sheep legend in Guangzhou
Every place in the world has its own traditional legends or fairy tales that show its characteristics.Legends are not just simple stories passing from the past.But rather,they are some kinds of symbols that indicate the internal system of the local people.Guangzhou,in which I live,also has a unique legend regarding 5 sheep.Feeling interested,I researched on the legend to identify the effect of the legend on the people in Guangzhou.
Guangzhou has been called “city of sheep” .According to the legend of sheep,there was a period of time when people near Pearl River (located in Guangzhou) managed their livings by eating fish.One day,5 gods came down to Guangdong province by 5 differently colored sheep.Each sheep was holding an ear of rice on its mouth.Those gods handed the rice to people and taught them to grow rice.After that,they prayed for bless of the land and flied back to the sky.The 5 sheep stranded still and later,became stones.The blessing kept the place fruitful and prosperous for a long time.
When I first came to Guangzhou,I visited Yue Xiu Park in Yue Xiu district to see the Five Sheep statue.It was the place that represents Guangzhou city,according to what my Chinese friend said.
The statue was constructed by a famous sculptor called Yin Ji Chang in 1959.It has height of 11m.While the biggest sheep is biting the ear of rice,showing an imposing figure,4 small and cute sheep around it are eating grass or hanging out.However,the big one was not the kind we commonly saw.Usually,the sheep is a symbol of docility and mildness.In this case,the sheep looked like a valiant general that fights against evil spirits.
Sheep was an animal that has been continuously receiving love from people.Due to its mildness,it represents the benevolence and love.Moreover,it only feeds on the grass,providing fur,milk and even their droppings that can be used for the fertility of the lands.They sacrifice their whole body to contribute to the people.All of their characteristics made people come up with a belief that sheep carry the luck,and therefore they deserve worships.
Guangzhou was a city of various cultures.The ear of rice that the sheep brought combined the nomadic culture with agriculture because people no longer had to wander around for food.As a starting point of the Sea Silkroad,it got the western cultures from the distant countries.With the diversity in culture,Guangzhou has been developing in great prosperity.
Guangzhou adopted 5 sheep in the legend to use them as mascots for Guangzhou Asian game in 2010(each named,Le yang yang,A xiang,A he,A ru,A yi).I really think there will be good things happening in Guangzhou,under the blessing of 5 sheep.
