I personally enrolled in some after-school classes. They were classes that help me prepare for the TOEFL test. They were very helpful to take the test but not beneficial for my English in general. I think it's necessary to take after-school classes when you have a clear goal in your mind. For example, you want to pass some kind of tests or go abroad. They will improve your performances. They will make your life easier. However if you think you need to take them only because everybody else is taking them, then you shouldn't take them, because they are not going to help you.
